The Ultimate Guide For Hair Types

The Ultimate Guide For Hair Types

Understanding our skin type helps us care for it and choose the right products, and the same logic can be applied to hair.

Knowing your hair type means knowing how to maintain its health and shine, allowing it to grow and look its best. However, staying in the dark, using the wrong methods and products can lead to dry, flat or dull-looking hair and even possible damage.

So, let’s dive into a quick and easy guide that will provide all the info you need for beautiful, bouncy and hydrated hair!

What does “hair type” mean?

When people say “hair types,” they usually refer to the hair thickness and the curl pattern. If you’re unsure about yours, wash your hair without applying any products afterward and inspect your hair strands BEFORE blow drying.

Your hair will surely fall into one of the three main categories – straight, wavy, or curly.

1. Straight Hair

Straight hair has no natural curl pattern, and while the hair thickness can vary, it falls flat.

That’s why a volumizing shampoo would be an excellent choice. It lifts the hair from the root, making it effortlessly bouncy and full.

You could also try one of the oldest tricks in the book – blow drying your hair upside down to create more volume. And if you feel like that’s still not enough – consider a layered haircut!

Of course, before trying a blowout hairstyle, don’t forget to use the leave-in conditioner of choice to ensure gorgeous looking, glossy hair.

Another thing to keep in mind is that straight hair tends to be on the oilier side. So, make sure to use the products that don’t contain additional oils and use a clarifying shampoo every once in a while for a deep cleanse of your scalp and roots.

2. Wavy Hair

Wavy hair is somewhere in between straight and curly, and forms a distinct “S” shape.

In my 25 years of working in the hair industry, I’ve noticed that many women treat their wavy hair as straight, only because it’s not as wavy as they imagine it.

This can lead to unnecessary damage (frizz, split ends and breakage). That’s why it’s important to understand your wavy hair and embrace it – so you can also help it shine with the proper care and products.

The main concerns I see when ladies with wavy hair come to my salon always boil down to the same two issues: frizz and lack of shine.

We all know how annoying frizz can be, right? I completely understand the frustration, being someone who struggles with this,, and I have a few tips and tricks up my sleeve!

Always make sure to use an anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner, or consider investing in an anti-frizz leave-in. Yes, it’s that simple!

Another great tip is to wash your hair with cold water whenever possible, because cold water closes the cuticle of the hair, helping it prevent frizz.

3. Curly Hair

Curly hair is characterized either by loose curls that form an ‘S’ shape or a tighter, spiral pattern.

This hair type is typically much thicker than all the other types, but it’s also prone to dehydration. Understanding how to take care of your hair type is important for all, but especially when it comes to curly hair.

The first and most important advice I have for all my curly haired ladies is to MOISTURIZE. I cannot stress enough how important this is – curly hair needs to be well hydrated in order to both look great and stay healthy.

As far as the product ingredients go, sulfates can strip your hair from its natural oils, so I suggest using sulfate free shampoos and leave-in conditioners.

For best results, I recommend a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week and using a cream or hair oil designed specifically for curly hair.

Bonus tip: If possible, choose a silk or satin pillowcase. Not only will you feel like a princess, but your curls will be thankful – and frizz free!

Note: All of these tips are especially useful for my coily haired ladies, too! Always remember to moisturize, deep condition and avoid heat whenever possible, and your hair will look amazing!

Remember: all hair types are beautiful in their own way!

While this guide provides general advice and some very important tips, don’t forget that everyone’s hair is unique, and what works for some – may not work for you. So, don’t be afraid to experiment and find what works best for your hair!

Don’t let the “grass is always greener” attitude apply to your relationship with your hair. Show your natural hair some love and wear it proudly.
