Yeeeah, I know you’ve heard the same things I have – washing your hair every day is bad, it can dry your scalp, give you dandruff, the whole spiel! But is there actually any truth to it?
As a result of these scares, I know you’ve probably also heard about hair training. You know, when you try to “train your hair” to stay cleaner for longer, which in turn helps you prolong washing times.
So, what’s the truth? Or, as my daughter would say—what’s the tea? Is it bad to wash your hair every day? What if you have to wash it daily? Let’s discuss and finally put this subject to rest because, believe me, you’ll be surprised by the things I’m about to tell you.
Do you remember the good old days when washing your hair wasn’t so complicated? Your hair would get oily, you’d wash it as usual, and go on about your life—rinse and repeat. But at one point, people became obsessed with trying so hard to go days without washing.
Why? Suddenly, hair experts began saying that washing your hair is bad because shampoo is too stripping. What does that mean? Overwashing could now, apparently, cause hair damage, a dry and itchy scalp, and more.
Some of those things I do understand—when you wash your hair, you’re stripping it of natural oils, causing a little bit of dryness. But that’s why we use hair conditioners and masks to nourish our hair back to full health.
But in this “stop washing your hair” frenzy, we saw the birth of hair training—going days without washing so that your hair would produce less sebum and oils… somehow. Okay, so let me ask you this—how often are you supposed to wash your hair if it gets greasy after a day?
No, seriously. We’ve had so many Hello Gorgeous Salon Naples clients tell us they wash their hair in the evening, just to find they have to wash it again the very next day. Yup, that results in them washing daily, and yet those strands are as luscious and healthy as always. How come?
It’s pretty simple! People whose locks get greasy faster simply have sebaceous glands in their scalps that are working overtime, and this is normal! They just produce more natural oils than average.
This is usually due to genetics, but it can be attributed to a myriad of factors, like:
And more. Yes, washing habits can contribute to this, but this contribution is so insignificant that I shouldn’t even mention it.
The thing is, if you notice your hair becoming greasy much faster than before, you could be looking at product build-up too. Using shampoos that are too heavy on your scalp, or not rinsing them properly, will do that to you. But luckily, there’s a solution to this problem!
We know some people need to wash their hair daily. If you’re one of them, I know you, much like the rest of us, don’t want to accidentally damage your hair with overwashing. But at the same time, I understand—when your hair is super oily, no amount of dry shampoo can save you.
So, I’d like to introduce you to clarifying shampoos! Their lightweight formula is super gentle on the scalp, helping you get the hair refresh you need without the risk of damage.
But what does clarifying shampoo do? Aside from being gentle, it helps remove excess sebum and product build-up—giving you a clean slate, if you will. Usually, people use these shampoos once or twice a week, but if you wash daily, you need something this gentle.
And I know what you’re thinking—would hair training work for you? Or maybe you’ve already tried it. Unfortunately, the latest research shows that, aside from a couple of success stories, there’s no scientific evidence that hair training works. You can always give it a try, though, and let us know if it worked!
Now, I know you have so many questions left unanswered. Or, even worse, you’ve found too much conflicting information on the Internet and aren’t sure who to believe. So, I’ve asked my expert stylists to answer some of the most frequently asked questions related to daily hair washing. Here we go!
This is entirely subjective! But without getting into too many confusing details, we’ll tell you this—the most reputable trichologists advise us to wash our hair whenever it’s oily and dirty. For some, this means daily. For others, this could be once every three days.
Definitely, but only when you’re in a pinch. Don’t make this a regular practice because your scalp can be a bit more sensitive than your skin elsewhere.
Not only can you, but you definitely should. I know you might be a bit apprehensive, especially if it’s your first time washing braided hair, but you’ll find the process super simple—trust!
So, what do you think – is it safe to wash your hair daily? I’d like to think so! Because listen, I wash mine whenever needed. Sometimes that’s once every 3 days, and sometimes I wash it day after day if I have an event and want my hair looking super fresh.
And if you want to look fresh and dolled up for your upcoming events, look no further than the best hair salon Naples, FL – salon Hello Gorgeous. Our expert stylists are there to give you the royal treatment and make your hair dreams come true.
