If you’ve been thinking about getting bangs lately, you’re definitely not the only one.
Bangs are having a serious moment, and some of our favorite celebrities are helping put them back in the spotlight. From Dakota Johnson bangs to Jennifer Lawrence fringe haircut, we’re seeing more women embrace face-framing styles that can completely change a haircut without sacrificing much length.
Even celebrities who have worn bangs for years continue to prove how versatile they can be. A Taylor Swift haircut, for example, rarely feels complete without some version of her recognizable fringe.
But before you sit in the salon chair there are a few things to consider. Bangs can be beautiful, but the style you choose matters just as much as deciding to get them in the first place.
I think part of the appeal is that bangs give you a noticeable change without requiring a completely new haircut.
You can keep your long hair, bob, lob, or layers and simply change what’s happening around your face. Depending on the style, bangs can highlight your eyes, soften your features, or give an existing haircut more shape and personality.
We’re also seeing a return to haircuts with more movement and face framing pieces. Think of the lasting popularity of the Rachel haircut, but with today’s softer, more personalized approach to layers. Instead of everyone wearing exactly the same cut, we’re choosing fringe and layers based on the person wearing them. And that’s exactly how bangs should be approached.
If you’re curious about bangs but nervous about committing to a full fringe, curtain bangs are one of my favorite places to start.
Curtain bangs are typically shorter toward the center and gradually become longer toward the sides, creating that soft “curtain” around your face. They blend especially beautifully into layered hair, which is why long layers with curtain bangs have become such a popular combination.
One of their biggest advantages is versatility. You can wear them parted through the middle, sweep them slightly to the side, or blend them into the rest of your hair as they grow.
The downside? They aren’t completely effortless. If you want that beautiful curved shape you see in photos, you’ll probably need to spend a few minutes styling them with a blow-dryer and round brush.
If you want your haircut to feel noticeably different, a fuller fringe will definitely do it.
Full bangs can fall straight across the forehead or have a slightly softer, textured finish. Dakota Johnson is probably one of the first people who comes to mind when we talk about this look. A classic Dakota Johnson’s red carpet hairstyle often pairs her long hair with that recognizable fringe framing her eyes.
The biggest advantage of full bangs is impact. You can keep most of your existing length and still walk out of the salon looking completely different.
But they’re also more of a commitment. Full bangs need regular trims, and depending on your hair texture, they may require daily styling. They can also become oily more quickly because they sit directly against your forehead.
Not ready for a thick fringe? Wispy bangs give you a similar effect with less weight.
They’re softer, lighter, and allow some of your forehead to show through. That can make them easier to incorporate into an existing haircut without making the front of your hair feel too heavy.
They can also be a great option for finer hair because you don’t need to dedicate as much hair to creating the fringe.
The trade-off is that wispy bangs still need some styling to sit properly. Humidity, wind, or simply sleeping on them can quickly change their shape – which is something we definitely understand here in Florida!
So, are bangs worth it?
The biggest pro is how much they can change your look without sacrificing your overall hair length. They can draw attention to your eyes, add movement around your face, and make a haircut you’ve had for years suddenly feel fresh again. There are also so many versions available that we can customize the length, thickness, and shape rather than giving everyone the same fringe.
The cons mostly come down to maintenance. Bangs usually require more frequent trims than the rest of your haircut. You may also need to style them in the morning, especially if you have cowlicks, curls, or hair that reacts strongly to humidity. And once you decide to grow them out, there will inevitably be a period when they’re somewhere between bangs and face-framing layers.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get them. You just want to know what you’re signing up for!
If you’ve been saving photos of bangs for months, I’d say they’re at least worth discussing with your hairstylist.
Bring your inspiration pictures to your appointment, but don’t feel like you need to copy someone else’s fringe exactly. Your face shape, hairline, natural texture, density, and everyday styling routine all affect which type of bangs will work best for you.
At Hello Gorgeous Beauty Salon, we can take the bangs you’ve been admiring and customize the length, shape, and thickness to work with your own hair.
