Butterfly Cut vs Wolf Cut: Which One Is Right for You?

Butterfly Cut vs Wolf Cut: Which One Is Right for You?

Hair trends come and go, but two haircuts that have definitely taken social media by storm are the butterfly haircut and the wolfcut hairstyle. In the past year, I’ve seen a rise in their popularity, especially in my salon, Hello Gorgeous Salon in Naples, FL. I’ve also noticed that some people use these names interchangeably – butterfly and wolfcut –  and while somewhat similar, they are two separate styles with different vibes.

If you’re here, chances are you’re interested in changing your hair, and are wondering which of these two stunning styles is the perfect one for you.

So, without further ado, here’s a comparison of the two styles – highlighting their similarities, differences, and key considerations before scheduling your appointment.

The Butterfly Haircut: Soft, Feminine Layers

The butterfly haircut is one of my all-time favorites. It’s a feminine, gorgeous style that is flattering on everyone. It feels light, airy, and effortlessly chic, perfect for all who love the ‘old money’ aesthetic.

This style features layers and is often paired with curtain bangs that blend seamlessly, beautifully framing the face. The butterfly haircut suits both fine and thick hair, adding fullness and dimension to fine strands, while enhancing volume and bounce in thicker hair.

You may be wondering how to style it, and good news is – the options are endless. From 90s blowout to soft waves, you can adapt the cut to any mood or occasion.

The 90s Blowout for a Supermodel Bounce

All you need is a good heat protectant, a medium to large-sized round brush, and some Velcro rollers.

This style requires patience, but it’s sooo worth it! Work in sections and apply the rollers. While some say it’s enough to let the hair cool down and then remove the rollers, in my experience, leaving them in for at least 30-40 minutes ensures your hair won’t fall flat as soon as you leave the house.

Apply some hairspray for a stronger hold, and enjoy looking like a ‘90s supermodel for the day!

Soft Waves for Wispy Layers

Now, if you want to feel feminine and romantic without seeming like you tried too hard, then soft waves are an excellent way to emphasize the layers of your butterfly haircut.

If your hair is naturally wavy, you are lucky – all you need to do is apply a leave-in conditioner and you’re all set.

On the other hand, if your hair is naturally straight, a curling mousse or a texturising spray will bring out the individual layers. For this, I recommend skipping the round brush and opting for a curling wand. Work in medium sections, leaving the ends untouched.

If you don’t own a curling wand or simply want to give your hair a break from heat styling, you can try heatless curls using your robe belt. This technique became popular several years ago, and I love it – just make sure to work in larger sections and keep it loose to achieve waves instead of curls.

The Wolfcut Hairstyle: Textured and Bold

It’s time to leave the soft, feminine, ‘old money’ butterfly haircut behind and step into the ‘cool girl’ era. And what better way to do it than the wolfcut?

What exactly is a wolfcut hairstyle? It’s a blend between a mullet and a shag, perfect for women who like to turn heads wherever they go. The style features heavy, choppy layers on top and longer, wispy layers on the bottom, creating an undone, unpolished, edgy vibe that many love.

Styling the wolfcut is very easy, depending on the type of results you want to get.

Messy Waves for a Lived-in Look

This is by far my favorite way to style a wolfcut. Simply spritz on some texturizing or sea salt spray and scrunch your ends.

Your hair will have dimension and texture, letting you rock that chic, effortless vibe – even while running errands.

Edgy and Straight

For women who prefer adding their own twist to their hair, I suggest straightening the top part for a sleek, structured look, while leaving the ends slightly tapered. It’s polished and intentional, while adding some softness and movement to the ends.

Think of it as minimalist, with a bit of rebellious spice.

Butterfly vs Wolfcut: How to Decide Which One’s for You

Both the butterfly haircut and a wolfcut hairstyle are trendy, stylish choices, but before deciding, take some time to consider your lifestyle, aesthetic, and hair type.

To figure out which one is ideal for you, ask yourself these questions:

If your personal style is feminine and classic, you don’t mind trims every 6-8 weeks, and frequent heat styling with a round brush – then a butterfly haircut is a great choice for you. It works well on almost all hair types, but it might not be the best choice for curly-haired girlies.

On the other hand, if your aesthetic is unconventional and daring, then a wolfcut is an obvious choice. It’s low-maintenance, especially if you want to wear it tousled and messy. It’s great for most hair types, but requires a skilled hair-stylist if you have thick hair. To maintain the shape, a trim every 8-10 weeks is more than enough.
