Hair Mask VS Conditioner: Is Blake Lively Right?

Hair Mask VS Conditioner: Is Blake Lively Right?

Blake Lively hair care line is out and it’s everything everyone’s talking about these days – and no wonder! I know you know Blake, and aside from being a fantastic actress, she’s widely known for her timeless beauty and glorious hair.

Oh yes! I can’t tell you how many women visited my salon asking for “the Blake Lively hair” in the past couple of years. So, when she came out with Blake Brown, everyone hurried to get their hands on it. But what makes this brand so special? The lack of conditioner.

You read that right – Blake Lively hair products don’t include conditioner. Instead, she’s giving us a nourishing mask, so that you, too, can try the shampoo+mask routine she swears by for almost 20 years now.

And now, the debate is on. Are hair masks about to dethrone conditioner and be the hair care product to use if you’re looking for soft and shiny hair? Or is this just another passing trend?

With these thoughts in mind, I decided to break both product types down for you, so that you can invest in what YOUR hair needs. Let’s get to it!

Conditioner basics: Locking it all in

If you think bleaching your hair is the only thing that damages it, you couldn’t be further from the truth. Our strands are delicate, and things like daily “wear and tear” can also cause tiny amounts of strain that, when added together, lead to breakage.

Luckily, this isn’t something you should worry your pretty locks about because conditioners exist! This hair care product is there to rejuvenate your tired strands, giving them a silky smooth appearance… but not only that! Conditioners improve the feel, texture, and manageability of your hair too.

So yes, this product is great if you’re having trouble brushing your mane because it gets tangled easily or you’re just a curly-haired goddess. But how does it really work? While your shampoo opens and cleans the hair cuticles, conditioner is there to seal and lock the moisture in. It’s as simple as that!

And the fantastic thing about it is that it comes in various forms – gels, creams, lotions, sprays, and so much more! That means you can include them in your routine however is the most convenient for you.

Hair Masks basics: Providing nourishment

If your hair is dull, dry, and damaged – you might need more than just a simple conditioner to bring it back to health.

Many believe that conditioners and masks are pretty much the same. They both hydrate, condition, and give your hair that healthy shine. So… what’s the difference? A hair mask does the job on a much deeper level.

Enriched with natural oils and ingredients that are amazing for your hair, this product is considered a reparative treatment. So, how does it work? It penetrates the hair shaft, giving it protein and nutrients it lacks. In return, you’re left with the kind of shine and silkiness that can only come from hair glazing.

There’s not much more to it! Is the verdict in, then? Are hair masks officially better than conditioners? Even though they’re Blake Lively approved, let’s discuss!

Should you use conditioners, hair masks… or both?

There’s a veeeery subtle difference in what these two products do for your hair. A hair mask provides long-term results, and you shouldn’t be slathering it on more than once a week. And while 20 minutes is enough for your mask to do what it’s supposed to do, some people recommend sleeping in them for best results!

On the other hand, conditioners are a lot simpler to use. Some are leave-in, while others you should rinse out after a couple minutes, and voila! You get instantaneous results… but not much else. That’s why you can use this hair product every time you wash your hair, ensuring it always looks shiny and healthy.

However, the trick is that you should use a conditioner after a hair mask. Yup, you need them both!

While your strengthening hair mask (or any other) is incredible at nurturing your strands, you still need a product that will lock it all in. Because what good is a product that’s not gonna stay put, right? That’s where conditioner comes in.

To summarize – your conditioner cannot repair your dry and damaged hair, but it’s essential in locking that nourishment in, so that your hair can not only look healthy but BE healthy.

The solution for damaged hair

So, is Blake right to not include a conditioner in her Blake Brown brand? I’m sure the mask she spent seven years making is amazing. It must be enriched with all kinds of do-good ingredients, but where and how does the lock-in part come into play? Whatever the case, I’m excited to see more brands dedicated to bringing back healthy hair because that’s always trendy.

But like I said, if you have dry, dull, or damaged hair – mask+conditioner combo is key. And if you feel like you need a bit more care to return your locks to their former glory, come to the Hello Gorgeous Naples salon for a nourishing Olaplex treatment!
