Keratin 101 — All You Need to Know Before Booking Your Treatment

Hi everyone, Lili here! I’m the owner of Hello Gorgeous Naples, and If you are looking for keratin treatment in Naples, Florida, our staff at Hello Gorgeous will be more than happy to assist you.

But you probably have a lot of questions about the procedure, whether it will damage your hair, and how to ensure that you get the best possible results. I believe in transparency and educated decisions, so I will always tell you how things are, share my experiences, and dispel any myths surrounding the topic we’re talking about.

So, let’s start from the beginning. Here is everything you need to know before booking your treatment at our Hello Gorgeous salon in Naples.

What Is Keratin?

The first thing we should discuss is what keratin actually is. In short, keratin is a protein that makes up your hair, nails, and skin. It is found in all vertebrates, not just humans, as it also makes up horns, hooves, wool, and claws. But, besides being the main “ingredient,” it also has a protective role, shielding the inside of cells.

In the past couple of years, it became the synonym for hair treatment. When talking about keratin, it usually refers to a protective procedure that can straighten the hair and add gorgeous shine to it. If you’ve always dreamed of having gorgeous silky hair like the ladies in L’Oreal or Garnier commercials, the only thing you need to do is book an appointment, and my team and I will make it happen.

How Does It Work?

Keratin treatment is a chemical process, and its goal is to add a protective layer to your hair. The coating will also add that famous shine you’ve probably seen in your favorite beauty magazines. In addition, it will make your hair frizz-free.

Before the treatment, the hairdresser will wash your hair. It is essential for us to remove all oils and any form of product residue. As for how long it will last, it mostly depends on hair length and your hair type.

Once your hair is shampooed, the hairdresser will proceed to apply keratin. They will place the product from root to ends while combing the hair to ensure that keratin is evenly spread. After that, the only thing left to do is to blow-dry the hair. However, depending on the client’s wishes, we can finish up with flat-ironing, based on how straight and smooth the hair needs to be.

As for the hair type, you should not worry. Almost anyone can enjoy having keratin-infused hair. The only clients we would not recommend keratin to are those with thin, fine, or overly processed hair. Since the treatment still involves chemicals and heat, it can only further damage the follicles. If you’re unsure, you can always drop by our salon, and ask for our advice, my team and I are always willing to help!

Can You Do It at Home?

In theory, yes. Nothing is stopping you from trying it out at home. But there are so many things to consider before you do that. Firstly, you need professional equipment. But the results will never be the same as if you decide to visit a hair salon. In addition, this type of hair strengthening can cause some damage if done improperly, which is why you should avoid doing it on your own.

Also, you will need to know what products to buy. That includes both products for hair straightening and tools you will be using. The main problem here is that professional equipment requires experience if you want to avoid any possible problems.

Furthermore, there are so many products out there advertised as featuring keratin, but most of them are not either useless or unnecessary. Getting your hair done by a professional will ensure you avoid extra expenses, and it will have a longer-lasting effect.

Is Keratin Safe?

Keratin treatments are perfectly safe if you take all the necessary precautions. Firstly, you should choose only products that don’t include formaldehyde. Don’t be afraid to ask your hairdresser about the type of product they are using. Your primary goal should be your safety, and beauty will follow!

Safety is one of the many reasons why professional treatment should be your choice. Keratin requires heat, for example, and if you are inexperienced, it can lead to hair breakage. If you live near Hello Gorgeous salon in Naples, Florida, you have nothing to worry about. Our hairdressers are experienced with keratin treatments, and you will get the best possible care!

Does It Work on Dyed Hair?

People often ask, “Can I dye my hair after a keratin treatment?” or, “Is hair dyeing before a keratin treatment feasible?” And the answer to both questions is yes! This is one of the primary differences between chemical-based relaxers and keratin.

In fact, the treatment will make your hair even more vibrant, allowing you to liven up the color. Of course, you should always talk to your hairstylist before the procedure since they will be able to give you more information based on your hair type.

One of the things we should mention is that dyeing your hair before the treatment will allow the keratin to protect your hair, making it stay gorgeous for a longer period of time. As for doing it after the treatment, well, it is still perfectly safe. But we don’t recommend any coloring procedures at least two weeks after the keratin to avoid damage. Of course, your hairstylist will also know more about it, so don’t be afraid to ask any questions.

Keratin Maintenance

Once the process is over, you will need to know what to do to ensure your hair remains frizz-free and keeps its silkiness for as long as possible – we always recite this list.

Your hairdresser will tell you how long you should wait before you wash it, for example. Since there are different methods, the time might vary as well. Usually, it is around three days after the treatment.

The next thing on the list is to find an appropriate shampoo and conditioner. Our recommendation is to go sulfate-free. Another thing to mention is that you should avoid washing your hair often after the treatment. Some people wash their hair daily, which will be a no-no. Furthermore, you should try and keep your hair down as often as possible.

Many customers have questions about the maintenance after the treatment. The most common ones are “Can I swim after keratin treatments?” and “Can I relax my hair after keratin treatment?”

Sure, after the first shampooing (three to four days after the treatment), you can safely swim without any worries. And as for using relaxers, well, keratin treatment will do a wonderful job of keeping your hair straight, and you won’t need to use a relaxer after it at all!

Of course, if you have any questions that I haven’t covered here, our staff at the hair salon in Naples will be more than happy to answer all of them, so don’t hesitate to get in touch – I am always looking forward to hearing from my Gorgeous ladies! Feel free to call us at (239) 261-3131 or schedule your appointment here.
