Why Does Frizz Happen (and how to prevent it)

Frizz happens when the cuticle of your hair is raised, which allows moisture to pass through. Because of this, your hair appears dry and frizzy instead of smooth and shiny.

There are so many factors that can cause frizz, so let’s take a look at them so you know what to look out for:

You wash your hair with scorching hot water

Listen, I get it. Hot water feels amazing, especially after a long day. But you need to keep in mind that it can truly cause damage to your hair. Hot water strips your hair of the natural oils keeping your hair moisturized and shiny, leaving it dull and dry which is not a good look.

Do this instead: Wash your hair with lukewarm water, and if you can handle a bit of cold shock try to do one final rinse with cold water. It will smooth down your hair and prevent frizz and dryness.

You overuse hot tools

While I understand that you want your hair to look absolute best, using your hair dryer, curling iron, or flat iron daily is only going to hurt you in the long run.

Do this instead: Always apply a heat protectant before styling your hair, and make sure the temperature is set at a moderate level. One of my favorite looks on myself is heatless curls, which can be achieved with a curling rod. Look into that, and your hair will thank you, I promise!

You’re too rough when towel-drying your hair

I must admit, I cringe so much whenever I see someone drying their hair with a towel without being gentle. This can cause so much breakage, undermining all your efforts to achieve long, healthy hair.

Do this instead: Switch to a microfiber towel or an old cotton T-shirt. This will help tremendously with frizz and prevent breakage.

Your ends are damaged

First of all, let me ask you: are your ends damaged or just dry? If you’re not sure how to tell the difference, check out this article.

If your ends are brittle and split, the damage will likely continue to go up, causing even more frizz.

Do this instead: Girl, you know the answer. You may not like it, and I get it, but there is no salvaging split ends. Try to get trims at least once every 2-3 months, and in the meantime, use hair oil to prevent your ends from becoming dry or damaged.

Products to Help You Tame Frizz

Okay, by now you’re probably nodding and wondering how to stop frizzy hair from ruining your day. With all the tips I gave you and a couple of product recommendations, frizz will become a thing of the past!

First of all, you need to invest in a moisturizing shampoo. Frizzy hair is a telltale sign of dry hair, so some moisture is all it needs! Well, not all but it’s certainly a great starting point.

After shampooing, remember to use your conditioner to moisturize it even further and choose the best leave in conditioner for frizzy hair you can possibly find (and fit into your budget, too). The best leave-in conditioner for dry frizzy hair is the one with ingredients such as glycerin, keratin and aloe vera. They will moisturize and smooth out your hair without weighing it down.

As your final step before using heat on your hair, please use a good heat protectant! This will be a game changer and I hope you’re using one already.

Can You Get Rid of Frizz Permanently?

I am not gonna keep you waiting and I will be real with you: no, you can’t.

Your hair will always frizz more or less due to a variety of factors we covered in this article, so pause before typing “how to get rid of frizzy hair permanently”.

However, there are certain methods to help you manage or reduce frizz significantly:

Keratin Treatment: This treatment seals in the cuticle of the hair making it less likely to frizz. It lasts a few months, but it’s not a permanent solution. If this treatment sounds great, visit the Hello Gorgeous salon Naples and my team will help you say goodbye to frizz.

Hair Relaxers or Japanese Straightening: These treatments straighten your hair, thus reducing frizz. However, I would definitely suggest Keratin treatment before I would ever suggest this, as it can be quite harsh on your hair.

Moisturizing and Nourishing Treatments: If you’re short on time, a quick mask can provide deep conditioning that will make your hair smooth and shiny. If you swing by my salon Hello Gorgeous, you can get a conditioning masque (plus, your hair will smell amazing, too).
