What Hair Color Would Suit Me? Discover Your Perfect Shade!

We all know those women who like to experiment with different hairstyles and colors, boldly rocking all kinds of shades and looking amazing while doing it. I often wondered – how do they manage to pull it off so well?

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re wondering the same. Maybe you’re finally thinking about dyeing your hair for the very first time, but you’re feeling unsure. Trust me, I understand how you feel!

Taking the leap and changing your natural hair color can seem overwhelming and risky, but it doesn’t have to be. Don’t get me wrong, it IS a big change (depending on the hair color you’re considering) but that doesn’t mean that the whole experience can’t be exciting.

So, grab a snack and keep on reading, because I’m here to help you make the right decision. Let’s dive right in!

1. Think about your skin’s undertone

You know all those misconceptions about your eye and hair color having a connection/no connection? Yeah, forget those. What you want to focus on instead is your undertone.

Your skin’s undertone is a very subtle color just below your skin’s surface, and there are three types: warm, cold, and neutral.

Wondering how to figure out your undertone?

Here’s a quick and easy tip: take a look at the veins on your wrist.
– If they look slightly greenish, you have a warm undertone.
– If they look slightly blue or purple, that means you have a cool undertone.
– Lastly, if they look quite neutral, or if they match the color of your skin, you have a neutral undertone.

Okay, now that you learned how to identify your undertone, you may be wondering – why is it important?

Well, the perfect hair color for you should compliment your features and undertone, making your complexion look radiant and beautiful. Otherwise you risk looking washed out and dull, which is something we definitely don’t want.

If your undertone is cool, shades like platinum blonde, ash brown and jet black would look incredible on you.

The opposite is true for my ladies with warm undertones – consider embracing honey, golden and copper tones while avoiding ashy and muted shades.

But what if you have a neutral undertone? You’re in luck! Almost all shades will look amazing on you, as long as you try to steer clear of extremes (very warm or very cool shades).

2. What about your natural hair color?

Now that you have an idea about what hair color suits you, it’s time to think about your natural hair color.

If you’re a blonde who’s considering becoming a redhead or a brunette, that’s most likely going to be a breeze. However, if your natural hair color is black and you’re dreaming of platinum locks, that can be daunting.

A great hairstylist and top-quality products will help preserve your hair’s health but you need to know that certain hair colors require more maintenance.
This doesn’t mean you should give up on your dream color, only that you should invest a bit more time and money into your hair care/hair maintenance routine.

I always suggest prepping your hair for the first hair dyeing experience. What I mean by that is making sure your hair is in the best possible condition before applying hair dye for the first time. Hair oiling, nourishing masks and leave-in treatments are a great way to set yourself up for success when the time comes.

One last thing to consider is if you want to go with permanent or semi-permanent hair dye.

Permanent dye looks more vibrant, lasts much longer but can potentially be more damaging. So if your priority is preserving healthy hair, opt for non-permanent dye instead.

3. Before you take the leap…

Always do a test strand 48 hours before! And I cannot stress the importance of this enough.

This gives you peace of mind knowing that you won’t have an allergic reaction and shows you how your hair will act once dyed. And just to be even safer – choose a strand from the underside of your hair. That way it stays hidden in case you change your mind!

Besides, doing a test strand helps you be less anxious about the outcome because you don’t have to fully commit to anything you’re unsure about.

Are you ready?

So, how are you feeling? Less unsure and overwhelmed and more excited and determined, I hope! Changing your hair color can be a perfect way to spice up your look and step out of your comfort zone.
