Gorgeous hair plays a huge role in confidence, elevating even the simplest outfit and making you feel like a diva, even on casual, no-makeup days.
But what happens when your hair starts looking unhealthy: shedding more than usual, receding, or forming bald patches? As someone who struggled with that at one point in my life, no one prepares you for how isolating excessive hair shedding or hair loss can be.
What’s even more frustrating is the sheer amount of different tips and advice online. From debates on whether scalp massagers help hair growth, which oil is best for hair growth and thickness, to pros and cons when it comes to extensions… it can all feel overwhelming.
But I’m here to help you navigate the noise and set the record straight. If you’re new here, my name is Lili! I’m the owner of Hello Gorgeous Salon, located in Naples, FL, and between my expert stylists and personal experience – I’ve gathered extensive knowledge. So, let’s dive in.
Unfortunately, this topic doesn’t have a simple answer. The truth is, identifying the cause of your issue and solving it involves a lot of trial and error, so my first advice is to be patient.
Reasons for hair shedding or hair loss can range from stress, nutritional deficiencies, harsh hair treatments, to genetics and medical conditions. If you’re unsure whether you’re experiencing hair shedding or hair loss, check out this article I wrote a while ago.
Once you have a clearer understanding of your current issue, it’s the time to start talking about the most important thing you should focus on – your scalp.
Firstly, let’s talk about cleansing. Remember the dark age of hair care when people talked about hair training, trying to convince everyone that going about your day with greasy hair somehow… benefited it? If you’ve been there, listen, I get it. Sometimes you feel so overwhelmed and frustrated with your situation that you’d try anything.
If you’re still unsure how often you should wash your hair, I’ve explained all about it here, so feel free to take a look.
When it comes to scalp cleansing, I recommend introducing a clarifying shampoo to your routine. Clarifying products are made to remove product buildup and excess oils that unclog the pores and “reset” the scalp. However, don’t overdo it – once a week is more than enough.
Secondly, do not underestimate the power of scalp massages. They work by encouraging circulation and improving blood flow. As a result, this brings oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles, which helps you grow thicker, healthier hair.
Massage your scalp with fingers or a massager – whatever feels best. It’s relaxing, can reduce stress, and a few minutes with a candle, music, or a podcast can make it a little self-care ritual.
Scalp massages are even more efficient when combined with hair oiling methods. However, the truth is, there is no one-oil-fits-all approach. No single oil can guarantee hair growth, but consistency paired with clarifying shampoos, good nutrition, massages, and a detailed approach will help you on your journey.
Whether you opt for a pumpkin seed oil, castor oil, rosemary oil, or jojoba oil for hair – each has its own properties, that paired with scalp massage, can truly make a difference.
You may wonder, “What about coconut oil? Does coconut oil help with hair growth?” Truth is, it wouldn’t be my first choice. In my opinion, there are many better suited ones, as coconut oil comes with some drawbacks.
Coconut oil is comedogenic, causing clogged pores. In addition to that, it binds to hair proteins, and for hair that is already low in protein or chemically treated, this can cause stiffness or breakage.
In conclusion, choose the one that works best for your hair. As I mentioned, this is a trial and error approach, so be patient, be consistent, and remember never to sleep with oil in your hair – 30 minutes to 3-4 hours is the sweet spot. Longer than that, you may be doing your hair a disservice instead of helping it.
Here are some of the daily tips that can support you on your journey to healthy, thick hair.
Be mindful of the way you treat your hair and try to swap tight styles for protective ones (for example, braids).
Hair needs hydration through conditioners and masks, but your scalp and follicles need internal hydration too. Drinking enough water might sound obvious and redundant, but dehydration absolutely affects scalp dryness, itchiness, and fragility.
If your hair is limp, stretchy when wet, or breaks easily, a protein treatment every few weeks might bring noticeable strength back.
Additional tip: While it’s not a daily habit, make it your priority to book a hair trim every 3-5 months. Your hair will look much thicker and healthier if the ends are fresh and not thin and damaged.
Healthy, thick hair doesn’t come from one magical ingredient. It comes from a combination of habits that support both your scalp and strands.
If there’s one thing I hope you take from this guide, it’s that you don’t need a complicated plan to see progress. The key is being dedicated and patient, and I am rooting for you to get the hair of your dreams.
With that being said, I know that sometimes you want your hair to look good before the results kick in – just know that my phenomenal team of hairstylists at Hello Gorgeous Salon is there for you, whether you’re looking for a trim, a hair treatment, or even extensions for your special day.
