When you hear the phrase “hair care”, what does it mean for you? Let me guess: shiny strands, thick, voluminous hair, amazing length and beautiful color/haircut, am I right?
But what about your scalp? A healthy scalp is where your journey to your dream hair begins. Yet I see so many people not knowing how important scalp health is, thus neglecting it.
No need to worry – I’m here to share all the knowledge I’ve gathered over years of working at Hello Gorgeous Salon Naples. Together, we’ll work to help you achieve your hair goals, so let’s dive in!
A healthy scalp is vital for beautiful hair. There’s no way around this – no matter how many trims you get or how many amazing products you use, your hair can’t be shiny, voluminous or long if your scalp is not healthy.
I love my long hair, and I know there are many of you ladies who agree and prefer their hair longer. Did you know that there is a strong relationship between scalp health and hair growth (or hair loss)? Research has shown that growing hairs are affected by the scalp health even before they emerge from the surface of the skin.
So what can you do to ensure that your scalp is healthy?
Firstly, I always advise my clients to take care of their diet and hydration above everything else. This will help promote healthy hair growth and support you on your journey. Drink plenty of water, try to eat a balanced diet and if necessary, consider introducing vitamins such as biotin, B12 and vitamin C.
Now that we got you covered with some general knowledge, let’s dive in deeper into the topic.
You know how you can get product build up on your face or on your hair strands when you use too much? Well, the same can happen on your scalp, too. Leave in products, mousse, dry shampoo, sweat, they all contribute to build up that can clog your pores and cause slowed growth or even hair loss.
One way to combat this is using a clarifying shampoo once or twice a week to ensure there is no build up left and your pores are not clogged.
For even better results, you can adjust your approach based on whether you have a dry scalp or an oily scalp.
I am not a believer of the “one size fits all” approach, and that is not how my hair stylists and I work at my hair salon in Naples.
Dry scalp and oily scalp require different, tailored approaches, and I am here to tell you all about it.
The main difference between the two is in the amount of natural oils the scalp produces and how it impacts your scalp.
If your scalp is itchy or flaky, with hair looking a bit dull or brittle, your scalp is dry. And before you start worrying – there’s really no need to! With the right routine and products, your hair will look amazing, trust me!
I mentioned what causes dry scalp – lack of moisture and natural oils your skin produces. This means you’d need to be very gentle with your scalp and avoid using harsh products, opting for hydrating, sulfate-free products instead.
And before you start googling “how to get rid of dry scalp” or “how to fix a dry scalp” please remember that even with the right hair care routine and products, these things take time. So enjoy the journey, be patient and you will see results!
However, if you’re a girlie with an oily scalp, I got you covered too!
Your hair probably feels greasy and looks shiny, or, even more frustratingly, you experience a greasy scalp dry ends situation. I understand how difficult and, more importantly, time-consuming this can feel!
A clarifying shampoo paired with dry shampoo when necessary (as long as you don’t overdo it) will be the best oily scalp treatment you can get.
For my girls with dry scalp, look for both clarifying and regular shampoos containing aloe vera to soothe and help with itchiness and consider trying natural oils to promote scalp health and circulation. If you don’t know where to start, check out this article.
Another piece of advice that is important for all my girlies with dry scalp is to avoid dry shampoo whenever possible. While dry shampoo is not bad for your hair, dry scalp tends to be more sensitive, so be mindful of that.
Chances are clarifying shampoo and a dry shampoo of your choice will be your best friends from now on! Use a clarifying shampoo once or twice a week to remove all the build up and ensure your pores are not clogged.
Make sure to take care of your scalp by finding that sweet spot between not overwashing your hair and not underwashing it either. And listen, I get it – this can be frustrating. But that’s where the dry shampoo comes into play. It can be amazing, as long as you don’t overuse it.
After ensuring that your scalp is fresh and clean, don’t forget to give some love to your ends! They can get really dry really fast, so use an oil mist to provide moisture they need.
One last piece of advice: clean your hairbrush regularly! It’s such a simple step that can make a big difference.
By taking care of your scalp, you’re investing time and effort into your dream hair, so don’t neglect it. Take into account your scalp type and give it precisely what it needs, and gorgeous hair will follow!
