Choosing a haircut for your child might seem simple – until you start looking at all the options!
You may have a photo of an adorable haircut you love, but just like with adults, the same style won’t necessarily behave the same way on every child. Straight, wavy, curly, fine, and thick hair all respond differently to certain cuts and lengths.
And with kids, there’s another important factor: maintenance. Most parents don’t want to spend 30 minutes styling their child’s hair every morning!
That’s why I always recommend choosing a haircut that works with your child’s natural hair texture rather than constantly trying to change it.
Straight hair can work beautifully with everything from short cuts and medium hair to bobs and longer styles.
Because straight hair tends to show a haircut’s shape clearly, precision matters. A blunt bob, for example, can create a clean, polished shape, while longer layers can add movement if the hair tends to fall flat.
For boys or children who prefer shorter hair, a classic scissor cut with slightly more length on top can be easy to manage and versatile enough to style in different ways.
One thing to consider is how the hair naturally falls around the forehead. Cowlicks and strong growth patterns can make certain bangs or very structured styles harder to maintain, so we always want to look at how the hair behaves before choosing the final shape.
Natural waves are beautiful, and the right haircut can help them stand out even more.
For longer hair, soft layers can remove excess weight and encourage the waves to form instead of being pulled down. Medium-length cuts can also work beautifully because they leave enough length for natural movement without becoming difficult to manage.
The key is not adding too many layers. Depending on the hair’s thickness and wave pattern, excessive layering can sometimes create unwanted volume.
Wavy hair also tends to have a mind of its own on humid days—something we know very well here in Florida! A slightly more relaxed haircut can make everyday styling much easier than trying to maintain a perfectly structured shape.
When your child has curls, their haircut should work with those curls, not against them.
One of the most important things to remember is that curly hair can look significantly shorter once it dries. That means we need to consider shrinkage before deciding how much length to remove. Layers can help distribute volume and give curls a more balanced shape, especially on medium or longer hair. Without the right shape, curly hair can sometimes become heavy at the bottom or overly bulky in certain areas.
For shorter curly styles, keeping enough length for the curl pattern to form can make the haircut much easier to manage.
And please don’t feel like your child’s curls need to be straightened to look “neat.” A good haircut should help their natural texture look its best.
If your child has fine hair, more layers aren’t always better.
Too much layering can remove density and make already-fine hair appear even thinner. Instead, I often prefer keeping the ends a little fuller with a more solid shape.
Bobs and medium-length cuts can work particularly well because they create the appearance of thicker, fuller hair. If your child prefers longer hair, subtle layers or gentle face framing can add movement without taking away too much volume.
Fine hair can also tangle easily, so choosing a manageable length can make brushing and everyday care much easier.
Thick hair gives us plenty to work with, but the wrong haircut can quickly feel heavy.
Strategic layers can remove some of that weight and make the hair easier to wash, brush, and style. For longer hair, layering can also create more movement and prevent the ends from looking overly bulky.
Short styles can work just as well, but we need to consider how the hair grows and where it naturally wants to create volume.
The goal isn’t necessarily to remove as much hair as possible. It’s to create a balanced shape that makes all that beautiful thickness easier to manage.
Inspiration photos are always welcome, but they should be a starting point rather than a strict blueprint.
Your child’s hair texture, density, growth pattern, lifestyle, and even how much they enjoy having their hair brushed or styled should all influence the final haircut.
