If you use a blow dryer, straightener, curling iron, or any other hot styling tool, heat protectant should be part of your routine. But here’s the thing: simply spraying a little product onto your hair before reaching for your flat iron doesn’t necessarily mean you’re using it correctly.
Where you apply it, how much you use, and when you apply it can all make a difference. And if you’re using way too much product to protect your hair better, you may simply be wasting it.
So, let’s talk about how to use heat protectant properly and some of the mistakes you should avoid.
First things first: choose a heat protectant that works for your hair type and the styling you’re planning to do. Some products are designed specifically for blow-drying, while others are formulated to protect against the higher temperatures of hot tools such as straighteners and curling irons.
You may also find heat-protectant sprays, creams, serums, and leave-in products. If your hair is fine, a lightweight spray may work better than a rich cream. If your hair is thick, coarse, or very dry, you may prefer something more moisturizing.
And don’t assume that every styling product offers heat protection. Check the label to make sure it’s designed to protect hair from heat.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is spraying heat protectant only on the top layer of their hair. It makes sense because that’s the part you can see, but your entire head of hair is exposed to heat.
Instead, divide your hair into a few sections and apply the product evenly from roots to ends, depending on the instructions for your particular product. You don’t necessarily need to completely soak your hair. The goal is even coverage, not having your hair dripping with product.
If you have particularly thick or long hair, working in sections can help you make sure you’re not accidentally leaving large areas untreated.
If you’re using a spray, don’t hold the bottle extremely close to your hair and spray continuously in one area. You’ll end up with one section that is completely saturated while the rest of your hair barely gets any product.
Instead, hold the product at the recommended distance and move it through your hair as you spray. Think light and even rather than soaking wet.
And if you’re using a cream or serum, rub a small amount between your hands first before distributing it through your hair. This can make it easier to spread the product evenly.
Depending on the product, you may need to allow it to distribute through your hair before starting your styling routine.
If you’re blow-drying, you can usually begin drying after applying your heat protectant according to the product’s directions. However, if you’re using a straightener or curling iron, make sure your hair is completely dry unless your specific product is designed to be used on damp hair.
Putting a hot tool directly onto wet or damp hair can cause serious damage.
So, don’t rush this step!
Here’s another easy way to waste both product and your hair’s patience: repeatedly running a hot tool over the same section. Even with heat protectant, excessive heat exposure isn’t ideal.
Work in small sections and use the appropriate temperature for your hair. You don’t automatically need the highest setting just because your tool can reach it.
If you can achieve the look you want with fewer passes, that’s generally a better approach.
Using heat protectant properly doesn’t have to be complicated.
Choose the right product, apply it evenly, don’t oversaturate your hair, and make sure you’re using your hot tools correctly. A little product used well is much better than a lot of product used poorly.
