Struggling With Hair That Tangles All the Time? Let’s Fix That

Does brushing your hair sometimes feel like a battle?

You start with a few little knots, and before you know it, you’re spending ten minutes trying to work through a tangled mess. And the worst part? Sometimes it feels like your hair gets tangled again just a few hours later! It’s a frustration I hear about from clients all the time, especially those with longer, finer, or color-treated hair.

But here’s something I always like to remind people: tangled hair doesn’t necessarily mean unhealthy hair. Sometimes it’s simply the way your natural texture behaves, while other times, dryness, damage, or everyday habits may be making things worse.

So, let’s talk about what’s causing those annoying knots and what you can do to prevent them.

Why Does Hair Get Tangled?

Hair tangles when individual strands wrap around each other and become difficult to separate. Some hair types are naturally more prone to this than others. Fine hair, for example, can easily twist together, while curly and wavy hair may develop knots because of its natural shape.

But texture isn’t the only factor.

When your hair is dry or damaged, the outer cuticle can become rougher, creating more friction between strands. This makes tangling more likely, especially around the ends.

Bleaching, frequent heat styling, and other chemical treatments can also contribute to this problem.

And if your hair is constantly knotting in the same areas, pay attention to where it happens. The nape of your neck, for example, experiences plenty of friction from clothing, scarves, and everyday movement.

Are You Brushing Your Hair the Wrong Way?

I know how tempting it is to grab a brush and pull through a knot, especially when you’re in a hurry. But forcing a brush through tangled hair can cause unnecessary breakage.

Instead, start at the ends and gently work your way upward, removing smaller knots before moving closer to the roots. If you come across a particularly stubborn tangle, hold the section above the knot to reduce pulling on your scalp.

Using a detangling brush or wide-tooth comb can also make the process easier.

And remember that wet hair is generally more vulnerable to stretching and breakage. If you detangle while it’s wet, use conditioner or a detangling product and be especially gentle.

Don’t Skip Conditioner!

If there’s one simple habit that can make a difference, it’s conditioning your hair regularly. Conditioner helps smooth the hair’s surface, reduce friction, and make strands easier to separate.

If your hair is long, thick, curly, or particularly dry, you might also benefit from a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray. But don’t assume you need the richest product available! Fine hair may respond better to lightweight formulas, while thicker or more damaged hair might need something more nourishing.

The goal is to make your hair softer and easier to manage without leaving it heavy or greasy.

Your Everyday Habits Might Be Making Things Worse

Sometimes the biggest causes of tangling have nothing to do with your shampoo or conditioner.

Sleeping with loose hair, for example, can create friction as you move against your pillow throughout the night.

Try a loose braid or a gentle protective hairstyle before bed. A satin or silk pillowcase may also help reduce friction.

And if you spend plenty of time outdoors here in Florida, wind, humidity, swimming, and sun exposure can all make your hair more difficult to manage.

After swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water and use conditioner when needed to help prevent dryness.

Let’s Make Your Hair Easier to Manage

Dealing with constant tangles can be frustrating, but a few adjustments to your routine can make a noticeable difference.

Gentle brushing, regular conditioning, protecting your hair from friction, and keeping your ends in good condition can all help reduce knots and unnecessary breakage.
